The answer is by breaking four campaign promises within 24 hours of being sworn in. Seriously.
Kudos to the Gouveneur Times for running this article on newly elected Congressman Owen's traitorous act to his constituents. Owens initially said that he felt the public option in the reform bill proposed by House Democrats didn't belong there, but he voted for the measure last night, along with 219 other Democrats and one RINO Republican.
His staff is eagerly trying to cover up his flip-flop, however, saying that he changed his position on October 30th, stating that he didn't want the public option to be a litmus test for the bill. Well, where was the notification to the general public (or very minimal in order to cover it up) on that, and why didn't they change his campaign website to reflect that? His website also says he opposes Medicare cuts, tax increases on the middle class, and taxing healthcare benefits; all of which are provisions in the bill.
This is why people labeled as "Blue Dogs" or "Moderates" cannot be trusted; they talk a big game about being "middle of the road" and "bipartisan," but they often find themselves licking the heels of Obama, Pelosi, and Reid. When the deck is stacked against them, they decide to go with the party leadership in exchange for fundraising and campaign promises instead of doing right by their constituents.
The good citizens of NY-23 had the wool pulled over their eyes as is the case with a "moderate" or "conservative" Democrat, and the bungling of GOP leadership in backing liberal Republican Dede Scozzafava didn't help at all either. Conservative Party candidate Doug Hoffman, who Owens narrowly defeated in the special election, already says he's looking forward to a rematch with Owens next year. Unfortunately for Owens, he's already handed ammo to Hoffman in his four broken promises.
